PS4 Marvel's Spider-Man game owners are left in the lurch after Sony confirms there are no plans to release the graphically-enhanced version of the game as a standalone on its next-generation console, PS5.
Instead, the remastered game will only be available on PS5 as part of a bundle (Ultimate Edition) with their new Spidey-title: Spider-Man: Miles Morales, set for release with the new console in November.
Here is Sony's statement to Kotaku on the matter:
"Marvel’s Spider-Man: Remastered is an enhanced version of Marvel’s Spider-Man, and is included as part of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales Ultimate Edition for the PlayStation 5. In addition, players who purchase Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales on PlayStation 4 can upgrade at no additional cost to the PS5 version of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and can take advantage of a paid-upgrade to download Marvel’s Spider-Man: Remastered.
There are no plans currently to offer Marvel’s-Spider-Man: Remastered as a standalone. Players with a copy of Marvel’s Spider-Man for PS4 can purchase Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales Ultimate Edition to experience Marvel’s Spider-Man: Remastered on PS5. Marvel’s Spider-Man for PS4 also will be backwards compatible on PS5."
A strange setup for upgrade pathways can be deciphered from the statement, where Spider-Man: Miles Morales can be upgraded for free from PS4 to PS5, but Spider-Man cannot - Players of the PS4 hit game will have to pay for the remaster, I'm afraid, and will have to buy the bundle too as the standalone will not exist as far as decisions stand at the moment.
You could argue that the remaster of Spider-Man isn't technically the same game as the PS4 release, hence the announcement that saved games will not be transferrable between the two, also backing up Sony's argument for the decision...but we will dismiss that in passing. Technicalities are so last year.
As per Sony's previous comments - PS4 game owners, whose games are being released on PS5, will be receiving a free upgrade - they have the get-out clause of Spider-Man: Remastered technically not being a standalone release on PS5, so as to say it doesn't qualify...YET.
I've got a spidey-tingle that demand will drive out a standalone version of the remastered game on PS5 for purchase in the near future and with it, maybe, a forced hand in the free upgrade direction.
